About Periwinkle Montessori

The uniqueness of the Montessori environment is that it emphasizes learning through all five senses. Children in a Montessori classroom are free to move about as they learn through self-guided exploration and discovery. The choice of activity is their own, and with the gentle guidance of a teacher and their peers, children learn and develop at their own pace. In this way, learning becomes an organic series of revelations that fosters self-discipline, concentration, motivation, and most importantly, a love of learning. Children who are given the freedom to explore their interests in a Montessori classroom enjoy arriving at school each day and look forward to Monday morning.

The 3 year age span in a Montessori Children's House classroom creates a small "community" in which the older children freely and spontaneously share their insights with their younger classmates. It is an extraordinary and highly effective method of learning that often leads children to reach for the stars.

A garden is a natural extension of the Montessori classroom. It is important for children to learn how to nurture their environment and their bodies, especially today in our culture of fast food and inactivity. With the summer session planting our first "plot" in the garden, we look forward to our first harvest in the coming weeks (pickles, tomatoes, lettuce) and months (pumpkins!).
